When cardioids are used in some situations, e.g., as hand-held microphones for vocalists or announcers, proximity effect can become quite prominent. In addition, the signal levels can become much higher than those of the other microphones being used at the same time, which may be more distant and/or of the dynamic type. Neither characteristic is desirable. So SCHOEPS now offers the MK 4 S/CCM 4 S in a special version known as the MK 4 A/CCM 4 A ("A" for "attenuation"), with a stronger low-frequency roll-off and 10 dB lower sensitivity.

This capsule is recommended for use exclusively in situations of very close pickup and at high sound pressure levels. At greater distances it would only deliver a low output level, resulting in an effective reduction in signal-to-noise ratio.
